Nowadays the META Tags are decreasing in importance in the eyes of the search engines who are using more sophisticated methods of ranking pages (namely link popularity, optimized anchor text).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There are many different types of META tags but the one that can affect ranking are the Keywords META tag and the Description META tag.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Keywords META tag:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This tag contains keywords relevant to a page. In the past search engines referenced this to determine how to rank a particular page. However many people started to abuse this and stuffed the tag with keywords that were not relevant to the content of the page. This confused search engines and subsequently returned weaker search results. To combat this less and less emphasis has been placed on the Keywords META tag. However this does not mean that it is entirely useless. Here are some reasons to still include it:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;* Some search engines still use it&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Although most search engines do not use the tag there are undoubtedly still some that do. For this reason place around 15-20 keywords relevant to your site or page into the tag. Do not attempt to cheat the search engines by repeating keywords as this is considered spamming and they may look unfavourably on this.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;* Account for misspellings of keyphrases&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;People can misspell certain keyphrases that you may be optimizing for so it is common to place these misspellings into the Keywords META tag. This allows you to rank in search engine results for misspellings without having to represent them on the actual content of your page.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Description META tag:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the past this tag was used to specify the text that would appear in search engine results alongside the link to your site. Keywords could be placed into this text to influence ranking. However it was abused similar to the Keywords META tag and has befallen the same fate, meaning it is not as useful as it once was. Some search engines do not display it in their results (most notably Google, which retrieves the text from content on your page) and do not use it to rank a site. Having said that some search engines do still use it so again it is a mistake to ignore it completely.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Descriptions placed into this tag should, strangely enough, be very descriptive of the page or site they reside in. Include a few relevant keywords/keyphrases that you are optimizing for in the description and try to limit its length to 25-30 words. Thus, in order to be successful on the Internet, your website must be search engine friendly. If people who search the Internet for your products or services are not finding your Web site, you need search engine optimization (SEO).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now some of you may take on the task of optimizing your own sites. Say that product is seasonal, only for the holiday season, and your ability to sell it relies on the timeliness with which you can get it seen on the search engines. You need a company that you can contact to put immediate marketing efforts to your new pages and products. If it takes 3 to 4 weeks for your SEO firm to make changes and improvements, you might want to look for a company that can keep up with your fast-paced business and demanding customers.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3. If they are not giving you monthly reports on the status of your listings, the increasing quantity of your links, and the number of unique visitors to your site, you might not be working with the right SEO company. Many people say not to bother with it, but I use the META keyword tag and I place my keyword phrases in it. Here's why. I use this tag to help me remember what keyword phrases I am optimizing the page for. You'll find this to be a big help later when you have a lot of pages and have forgotten what keyword phrases you were trying to optimize the page for in the first place.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For the META description tag, keep your most important keyword phrase near the beginning of the sentence and make this tag a full sentence.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Do NOT use bold or italic keyword phrases in the first sentence on the page, but DO use your most important keyword phrase in the first sentence, but not the first word.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;By all means, use your keyword phrases in your headings, (H1, H2 and H3).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Start putting keyword phrases in bold in the second paragraph.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Put your keywords or keyword phrases in italics a few times AFTER the first usage of the keyword. Never let the first usage of your keyword phrases be in Italics.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Use keywords in ALT tags.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It's very important to get other sites to use your most important keyword phase for your page in any inbound links. Of course, you are not in control of how other sites link to you, but work hard to get them to use your keyword phrase. Most sites will link to your home page, so give them the most important keyword phrase you are optimizing your home page for.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When you are linking from any page back to your home page, use your most important keyword phrase in the link. When your home page is linking to any other page, use the keyword phrase in that link that the other page is being optimized for.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Don't plan on getting much (if any) help by putting keywords or keyword phrases in your left Nav panel. Google likes keywords in full sentences. Putting the sentence in a paragraph is even better. By the way, a sentence according to Google is three or more words starting with a capital letter and ending with a period or other punctuation. Stop words such as:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&amp;quot;I,&amp;quot; &amp;quot;a,&amp;quot; &amp;quot;the,&amp;quot; and &amp;quot;of&amp;quot; do NOT count as one of your three words.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Follow these rules and your Web site will make a big jump in its relevancy for your keyword phrases. Following these rules will NOT boost your PageRank.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To be #1 or even in the top 10 on the search engines your relevance for a given keyword phrase is much more important than your PageRank.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For example, you could have a PageRank of 10 and still not show up in the top 100 sites when someone is searching for &amp;quot;peanut butter sandwiches&amp;quot; unless of course, your page is optimized for (and has a high relevance for) the phrase &amp;quot;peanut butter sandwiches.&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;One final point: Use your keyword phrase in an H1, H2 or H3 headline followed by a keyword-rich paragraph and then repeat this with another H1, H2 or H3 headline and another keyword-rich paragraph. And of course repeat this again.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Use this format in addition following the 10 rules above and you will have a page with a high relevance for your keyword phrases.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Don't try to optimize a page for more that two or three keyword phrases and always optimize for keyword phrases and NOT keywords. After all, the keyword is included within the keyword phrase. These pages show up high in Search Engine Results Pages (SERPS). When you click on one of these pages from a search engine result, you will be redirected to another page. (Usually a high pressure sales page.)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Is this misleading? You bet. Why? Because the page you click on from the serps is not the page you actually get to read.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Can Sneaky Redirects be considered as a Black Hat SEO tactic?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I think so. The reason being is that if your page is discovered, it does get banned. In the crudest form it was almost spamming, but done properly, it will get your website pages spidered almost immediately and indexed in less than a week.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Blog and Ping&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The crude method involved first setting up both a blogger (.blogspot) blog and a free myYahoo page. You add the RSS or Atom link from your blog to your myYahoo page, so that your blog feeds into your myYahoo website.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You then write a page into your blog with links to webpages that you want Google and Yahoo to find and index. After posting your new blog entry, you then ping your myYahoo page to tell it that there's a new entry at your blog. Then you go to Yahoo, open your myYahoo page, and the blog headline should be there.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The assumption is that Yahoo would spider all feeds going into it's myYahoo pages and because Google owns Blogger.com they would spider all new blog entries at Blogger.com ... and in fact this is indeed what happens. The search engine gods cull the information you need from the Internet...from tracking down an elusive expert for communication to presenting the most unconventional views on the planet. Name it and click it. Beyond all the hype created about the web heavens they rule, let's attempt to keep the argument balanced. From Google to Voice of the Shuttle (for humanities research) these ubiquitous gods that enrich the net, can be unfair ...and do wear pitfalls. And considering the rate at which the Internet continues to grow, the problems of these gods are only exacerbated further.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Primarily, what you need to digest is the fact that search engines fall short of Mandrake's magic mechanism! They simply don't create URLs out of thin air but instead send their spiders crawling across those sites that have rendered prayers (and expensive offerings!) to them for consideration. Even when sites like Google claim to have a massive 3 billion web pages in its database, a large portion of the web nation is invisible to these spiders. To think they are simply ignorant of the Invisible Web. This invisible web holds that content, normal search engines can't index because the information on many web sites is in databases that are only searchable within that site. Sites like www.imdb.com - The Internet Movie Database , www.incywincy.com - IncyWincy, the invisible web search engine and www.completeplanet.com - The Complete Planet that cover this area are perhaps the only way you can access content from that portion of the Internet, invisible to the search gods. Here, you don't perform a direct content search but search for the resources that may access the content. (Meaning - be sure to set aside considerable time for digging.)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;None of the search engines indexes everything on the Web (I mean none). Tried research literature on popular search engines? AltaVista to Yahoo, will list thousands of sources on education, human resource development, etc. etc. but mostly from magazines, newspapers, and various organizations' own Web pages, rather than from research journals and dissertations- the main sources of research literature. That's because most of the journals and dissertations are not yet available publicly on the Web. Thought they'll get you all that's hosted on the web? Think again.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Web is huge and growing exponentially. Simple searches, using a single word or phrase, will often yield thousands of &amp;quot;hits&amp;quot;, most of which will be irrelevant. A layman going in for a piece of info to the internet has to deal with a more severe issue - too much information! And if you don't learn how to control the information overload from these websites, returned by a search result, roll out the red carpet for some frustration. A very common problem results from sites that have a lot of pages with similar content. For e.g., if a discussion thread (in a forum) goes on for a hundred posts there will be a hundred pages all with similar titles, each containing a wee bit of information. Now instead of just one link, all hundred of those darn pages will crop up your search result, crowding out other relevant site. Regardless of all the sophistication technology has brought in, many well thought-out search phrases produce list after list of irrelevant web pages. The typical search still requires sifting through dirt to find the gold. If you are not specific enough, you may get too many irrelevant hits.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As said, these search engines do not actually search the web directly but their centralized server instead. And unless this database is updated continually to index modified, moved, deleted or renamed documents, you will land yourself amidst broken links and stale copies of web pages. So if they inadequately handle dynamic web pages whose content changes frequently, chances are for the information they reference to quickly go out-of-date. After they wage their never ending war with over-zealous promoters (spamdexers rather), where do they have time to keep their databases current and their search algorithms tuned? No surprise if a perfectly worthwhile site may go unlisted!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Similarly, many of the Web search engines are undergoing rapid development and are not well documented. You will have only an approximate idea of how they are working, and unknown shortcomings may cause them to miss desired information. Not to mention, amongst the first class information, the web also houses false, misleading, deceptive and dressed up information actually produced by charlatans. The Web itself is unstable and tomorrow they may not find you the site they found you today. Well if you could predict them, they would not be god!...would they?! The syntax (word order and punctuation) for various types of complex searches varies some from search engine to search engine, and small errors in the syntax can seriously compromise the search. For instance, try the same phrase search on different search engines and you'll know what I mean. Novices... read this line - using search engines does involve a learning curve. Many beginning Internet users, because of these disadvantages, become discouraged and frustrated.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Like a journalist put it, &amp;quot;Not showing favoritism to its business clients is certainly a rare virtue in these times.&amp;quot; Search engines have increasingly turned to two significant revenue streams. Paid placement: In addition to the main editorial-driven search results, the search engines display a second - and sometimes third - listing that's usually commercial in nature. The more you pay, the higher you'll appear in the search results. Paid inclusion: An advertiser or content partner pays the search engine to crawl its site and include the results in the main editorial listing. So?...more likely to be in the hit list but then again - no guarantees. Of course those refusing to favor certain devotees are industry leaders like Google that publishes paid listings, but clearly marks them as 'Sponsored Links.'&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The possibility of these 'for-profit' search gods (which haven't yet made much profit) for taking fees to skew their searches, can't be ruled out. But as a searcher, the hit list you are provided with by the engine should obviously rank in the order of relevancy and interest. Search command languages can often be complex and confusing and the ranking algorithm is unique to each god based on the number of occurrences of the search phrase in a page, if it appears in the page title, or in a heading, or the URL itself, or the meta tag etc. or on a weighted average of a number of these relevance scores. E.g. Google (www.google.com) uses its patented PageRank TM and ranks the importance of search results by examining the links that lead to a specific site. The more links that lead to a site, the higher the site is ranked. Pop on popularity!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Alta Vista, HotBot, Lycos, Infoseek and MSN Search use keyword indexes - fast access to millions of documents. The lack of an index structure and poor accuracy of the size of the WWW, will not make searching any easier. Large number of sites indexed. Keyword searching can be difficult to get right.&lt;br /&gt;In reality, however, the prevalence of a certain keyword is not always in proportion to the relevance of a page. Take this example. A search on sari - the national costume of India -in a popular search engine, returned among it's top sites, the following links:&lt;br /&gt;?www.scri.sari.ac.uk/- of the Scottish Crop research Institute&lt;br /&gt;?www.ubudsari.com/ -a health resort in Indonesia&lt;br /&gt;?www.sari-energy.org/ - The South Asia Regional Initiative for Energy Cooperation and Development&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Pretty useful sites for someone very much interested in knowing how to drape or the tradition of the sari?! (Well, no prayer goes unanswered...whether you like the answer or not!) By using keywords to determine how each page will be ranked in search results and not simply counting the number of instances of a word on a page, search engines are attempting to make the rankings better by assigning more weight to things like titles, subheadings, and so on.&lt;br /&gt;Now, unless you have a clear idea of what you're looking for, it may be difficult or impossible to use a keyword search, especially if the vocabulary of the subject is unfamiliar. Similarly, the concept based search of Excite (instead of individual words, the words that you enter into a search are grouped and attempted to determine the meaning) is a difficult task and yields inconsistent results.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Besides who reviews or evaluates these sites for quality or authority? They are simply compiled by a computer program. These active search engines rely on computerized retrieval mechanisms called &amp;quot;spiders&amp;quot;, &amp;quot;crawlers&amp;quot;, or &amp;quot;robots&amp;quot;, to visit Web sites, on a regular basis and retrieve relevant keywords to index and store in a searchable database. And from this huge database yields often unmanageable and comprehensive results....results whose relevance is determined by their computers. The irrelevant sites (high percentage of noise, as it's called), questionable ranking mechanisms and poor quality control may be the result of less human involvement to weed out junk. Thought human intervention would solve all probes....read on.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;From the very first search engine - Yahoo to about.com, Snap.com, Magellan, NetGuide, Go Network, LookSmart, NBCi and Starting Point, all subject directories index and review documents under categories - making them more manageable. Unlike active search engines, these passive or human-selected search engines like don't roam the web directly and are human controlled, relying on individual submissions. Perhaps the easiest to use in town, but the indexing structure these search engines cover only a small portion of the actual number of WWW sites and thus is certainly not your bet if you intend specific, narrow or complex topics.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Subject designations may be arbitrary, confusing or wrong. A search looks for matches only in the descriptions submitted. Never contains full text of the web they link to - you can only search what you see titles, descriptions, subject categories, etc. Human-labor intensive process limits database currency, size, rate of growth and timeliness. You may have to branch through the categories repeatedly before arriving at the right page. They may be several months behind the times because of the need for human organization. Try looking for some obscure topic....chances for the people that maintain the directory to have excluded those pages. Obviously, machines can blindly count keywords but they can't make common-sense judgement as humans can. But then why does human-edited directories respond with all this junk?!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And here's about those meta search engines. A comprehensive search on the entire WWW using The Big Hub, Dogpile, Highway61, Internet Sleuth or Savvysearch , covering as many documents as possible may sound as good an idea as a one stop shopping.Meta search engines do not create their own databases. They rely on existing active and passive search engine indexes to retrieve search results. And the very fact that they access multiple keyword indexes reduces their response time. It sure does save your time by searching several search engines at once but at the expense of redundant, unwanted and overwhelming results....much more - important misses. The default search mode differs from search site to search site, so the same search is not always appropriate in different search engine software. The quality and size of the databases vary widely.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Weighted Search Engines like Ask Jeeves and RagingSearch allows the user to type queries in plain English without advanced searching knowledge, again at the expense of inaccurate and undetailed searching. Review or Ranking Sources like Argus Clearinghouse (www.clearinghouse.net),&lt;br /&gt;eBlast (eblast.com) and Librarian's Index to the Internet (lii.org). They evaluate website quality from sources they find or accept submissions from but cover a minimal number of sites.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As a webmaster, your site registration with the biggest billboards in Times Square can get you closer to bingo! for the searcher. Those who didn't even know you existed before are in your living room in New York time!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Your URL registration is a no-brainer, considering the generation of flocking traffic to your site. Certainly a quick and inexpensive method, yet is only a component of the overall marketing strategy that in itself offers no guarantees, no instant results and demands continued effort for the webmaster. Commerce rules the web. Like how a notable Internet caveman put it, &amp;quot;Web publishers also find dealing with search engines to be a frustrating pursuit. Everybody wants their pages to be easy for the world to find, but getting your site listed can be tough. Search sites may take a long time to list your site, may never list it at all, and may drop it after a few months for no reason. If you resubmit often, as it is very tempting to do, you may even be branded a spamdexer and barred from a search site. And as for trying to get a good ranking, forget it! You have to keep up with all the arcane and ever-changing rules of a dozen different search engines, and adjust the keywords on your pages just so...all the while fighting against the very plausible theory that in fact none of this stuff matters, and the search sites assign rankings at random or by whim.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&amp;quot;To make the best use of Web search engines--to find what you need and avoid an avalanche of irrelevant hits-- pick search engines that are well suited to your needs. And lest you'd want to cry &amp;quot;Ye immortal gods! where in the world are we?&amp;quot;, spend a few hours becoming moderately proficient with each. Each works somewhat differently, most importantly in respect to how you broaden or narrow a search.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Finding the appropriate search engine for your particular information need, can be frustrating. To effectively use these search engines, it is important to understand what they are, how they work, and how they differ. For e.g. while using a meta search engine, remember that each engine has its own methods of displaying and ranking results. Remember, search strategies affect the results. If the user is unaware of basic search strategies, results may be spotty.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Quoting Charlie Morris (the former editor of The Web developer's journal) - &amp;quot;Search engines and directories survive, and indeed flourish, because they're all we've got. If you want to use the wealth of information that is the Web, you've got to be able to find what you want, and search engines and directories are the only way to do that. Getting good search results is a matter of chance. Depending on what you're searching for, you may get a meaty list of good resources, or you may get page after page of irrelevant drivel. By laboriously refining your search, and using several different search engines and directories (and especially by using appropriate specialty directories), you can usually find what you need in the end.&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Search engines are very useful, no doubt. Right from getting a quick view of a topic to finding expert contact info...verily certain issues lie in their lap. Now the very reason we bother about these search engines so much is because they're all we've got! Though there sure is a lot of room for improvement, the hour's need is to not get caught in the middle of the road. Question - the question that I (and probably every other Internet marketing expert on the planet) am most frequently asked:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&amp;quot;How do I get to be Number One in the search engines for widgets? After all, my company is the world's leading provider of widgets - it's ridiculous that these other nobody companies are coming up in search engines ahead of us . . . &amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My response is almost always along the lines of:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&amp;quot;Forget that right now, and get a life!&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;OK, so I am a little more tactful than that - and I do occasionally encourage an in-depth search engine optimization strategy, but usually I'll encourage clients to spend their website promotional budget in other ways.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here are the main reasons why I'm not generally enthusiastic about free search engines:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. You have to be really careful in choosing keywords&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Many people make the mistake of focusing on very generic keywords. Not only are these even more difficult to get top placement in, but they also won't generate you targeted traffic.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A prospect approached me recently for help with a coaching site. This site promotes teleseminars to help clients implement life changes described in various motivational books. This prospect initially said that he wanted to be &amp;quot;Number One&amp;quot; on a search for &amp;quot;books&amp;quot;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I'd suggest this would be a virtually impossible challenge for any search engine optimizer. But in addition, someone searching for &amp;quot;books&amp;quot; is probably really looking for Amazon, or Barnes &amp;amp; Noble, and not my client's teleclasses. He could spend a lot of money for very few qualified leads.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2. You need to speak the language of your visitors&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We all talk &amp;quot;geekspeak&amp;quot; - it's often second nature to us within our industry or area of expertise. And it's easy to forget that our prospects don't always use the same terminology. One of the most difficult areas in copywriting that I see is when technology sales people are trying to describe their products to a non-technical market - the result is usually incomprehensible!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But there's also the jargon that we use as a matter of pride, or because we've lost touch with how our markets think of us.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I worked recently with an association of plastic surgeons. They had their member database on their Web site, and wanted to attract visitors there to find a local practitioner.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Their &amp;quot;Number One&amp;quot; target keyword for the search engines was &amp;quot;rhinoplasty&amp;quot;. Well, I can only spell this because I just looked it up for this article - but usually you and I in the general public would never think of that - of course, we'd be searching for . . . &amp;quot;nose jobs&amp;quot;!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The surgeons didn't like this at all from an academic standpoint. But they had to concede the point when I presented evidence on most common searches from Overture's very handy Search Term Suggestion Tool at http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3. It's very passive marketing . . .&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My most pressing argument for not spending too much time on free search engines is that it's a very passive form of marketing. You're relying on a prospective visitor waking up in the morning, and realizing that they need something that you might provide. Then, you're relying on them choosing the precise keywords that you've targeted for search engine optimization. It's a fairly hit or miss business.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When do I disagree with myself?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There are some exceptions to all this. I do believe that search engines are well worth it when you have a niche product or service with extremely unambiguous and well-defined keywords.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For example, an audience member in one of my recent programs was working on a Web site to sell some incredibly advanced yoyos. I did recommend a search engine strategy to him - after all, if someone puts in &amp;quot;yoyo&amp;quot; as a search term, they'd almost certainly be a qualified lead!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What do I do instead?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That's the subject of numerous other articles. To get you started, you can find twenty-three of my favourite techniques in my free tipsheet.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But in short, I much prefer aggressively seeking out sites where your target markets are likely to be reading, or searching for information. That way, you can proactively bring your ideas, products and services to them, in places where they are much more likely to be receptive and interested. And there are so many options for different budgets and campaign sizes, both online and offline.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, are search engines worth it any more?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I'm not advocating ignoring search engines. And I do like the better paid models, such as Overture.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But I do suggest that you should be very clear about how much passive marketing you want to undertake, and whether the product or service that you're offering lends itself to this.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And if you do decide to optimize your site for search engines, pick the keywords that will be in the mindset of your customers . . . and be willing to settle for &amp;quot;Number Two&amp;quot; sometimes!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;By Philippa Gamse&lt;/p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/4356299622592911640-2561697202663112847?l=seotips12.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://seotips12.blogspot.com/feeds/2561697202663112847/comments/default' title='Poskan Komentar'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=4356299622592911640&amp;postID=2561697202663112847' title='0 Komentar'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/4356299622592911640/posts/default/2561697202663112847'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/4356299622592911640/posts/default/2561697202663112847'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://seotips12.blogspot.com/2008/06/are-search-engines-worth-it-any-more.html' title='Are Search Engines Worth It Any More?'/><author><name>Tips-tips Bisnis Spektakuler</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/15483564709741685375</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='http://img2.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author><thr:total>0</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4356299622592911640.post-4261570692454821852</id><published>2008-06-16T05:16:00.015-07:00</published><updated>2008-06-16T05:16:22.483-07:00</updated><title type='text'>Beyond Hits!</title><content type='html'>&lt;p&gt;Your Website visitor reports are a goldmine of information. If you don't review these on a regular basis, you can't fully evaluate the return on your Web investment. And, you could miss critical clues as to how user-friendly your site is, how effectively your message reaches your visitors, and what unmet needs they may have.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But the reports can be overwhelming - a confusing mass of graphs, numbers and URL's. How can you find the information that you really need, how do you know what to look for, and how do you make strategic decisions using the answers that you obtain?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Step 1: Knowing your markets&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;First, identify all the different types of visitor to your site, together with the reasons that they might be coming to you.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This may sound obvious, but in my experience there are nearly always visitor segments that are overlooked. Here are my starting suggestions for an association site:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;* Current and prospective members&lt;br /&gt;* Board members and staff&lt;br /&gt;* Current and potential vendors, advertisers and sponsors&lt;br /&gt;* Media&lt;br /&gt;* Content seekers&lt;br /&gt;* Job seekers&lt;br /&gt;* Your competition!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you don't have a press center on your site, you should consider it if you're interested in publicity. Reporters are increasingly looking for information online, and appreciate ready access to press releases, sample interview questions, and downloadable photographs of your key spokespeople.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The content seekers category describes visitors looking for content that you provide, but who are not prospective members. They might be searching your member database for a referral, or they might be interested in your information products - and so they're great prospects for non-dues revenue.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Step 2: Knowing your goals&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It's also key to know the required outcomes, not only for your overall site, but also for each individual section and page.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have a mantra in my speaking programs:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&amp;quot;Every page of your site should have a strategy&amp;quot;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Too many pages on the Web give great information, and then tail off, with no clear call to action. They expect visitors to go back to the navigational elements, and decide what to do next - but instead, many of them will leave.&lt;br /&gt;You should be absolutely clear about the outcomes you expect from each page - event registrations, newsletter sign-ups, product sales, etc. Or perhaps you want the visitor to go to another page - you'll be able to track this as well.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Step 3: Asking the right questions&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now that you have the audiences and outcomes for your site, you can start to make sense of all those numbers and graphs. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Based on what should be happening, you can formulate questions with which to approach the traffic reports to measure your site's effectiveness.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here are some ideas:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Are your long pages effective?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Often, I see long pages with key content &amp;quot;below the fold&amp;quot; - below the first screenful of information. Many visitors won't scroll down the page if they're not immediately engaged by it; therefore they'll miss the lower elements.&lt;br /&gt;Is this happening on your site? Look for clicks on the links that are further down the page - are you getting an appropriate amount of traffic to the inside sections that these lead to? How much time is the average visitor spending on your long page - are they clicking off to the first thing that catches their eye - if so, is this really where you want them to go?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Can you measure member benefits?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you provide an online database for prospective customers to find a supplier, track how many searches are done, and how many click-thru's your members receive. This can give you some powerful statements for your member benefits material.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What are the hot content areas?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Knowing your &amp;quot;Most Requested Pages&amp;quot; I also wanted to look at a way of funnelling Google page rank to all the internal pages on my site as quickly as possible&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have heard from a few search engine optimization companies that sitemaps are good ways of helping search engine spiders find all the pages on your site but have you every thought that using good quality sitemaps can also help your internal pages attain a very high Google page rank very quickly&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I was reading a Search Engine Optimization article about how Google likes pages with good quality relevant content and how they wanted to serve this quality content to their surfers. I decided to run a little experiment with sitemaps. I build two types of sitemap, one with just links to my article pages and the other with the same links but these links were also surrounded with relevant search engine optimized content.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sitemap without search engine optimized content&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;http://search.freefind.com/find.html?id=85113844&amp;amp;m=0&amp;amp;p=0&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sitemap with search engine optimized content&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;http://www.search-engine-optimization-review.com/seo-sitemap-11.html&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I created content rich sitemap with a neat bit of sitemap generating software that generates pages by using the title and description of your internal pages.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;http://www.search-engine-optimization-review.com/sitemap.html&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I started an aggressive reciprocal link campaign and my index page shot up to a PR 5 within 60 days.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;http://www.search-engine-optimization-review.com Google page rank 5&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Both types of sitemap pages gained a PR 4 but the funny thing was the pages that were linked from my content rich sitemap pages gained a PR3 but the sitemap pages with just text links to my internal pages were only a PR 1.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Six months after creating these sitemap pages the article pages linked from the content rich sitemap pages had attained a PR 5 but the article pages linked from sitemap pages that had just text links with no content had attained at the very best a PR 2.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have come the conclusion that Google does like quality search engine optimized content rich pages and using these sitemap pages to funnel Google page rank to your important internal pages is a wise thing to do.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My advice is to build your sitemap pages with content surrounding the links to all your internal pages so they are only two clicks away from your home page.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Example Home page - Good content sitemap page - internal pages&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you have a lot of sitemap pages (I had over 20 with 100 links per page) create links from your home page using text links. Googlebot, Wherefore Art Thou Googlebot?</title><content type='html'>&lt;p&gt;As a search engine optimization specialist I often optimize existing web pages for small business clients, upload them to the site and see pages re-indexed by Google within a week. This only happens with existing business sites that have been online for a few years. Google seems to be updating their index as often as every other week at this point and older established sites that are already indexed seem to be re- crawled on that twice a month schedule on a fairly routine basis.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Two clients that hired me for recent work saw their rankings shoot to the top for a newly targeted search phrase in a weekend when I did optimization on a Thursday and they were ranked instantly by Saturday. Now keep in mind that this doesn't happen for everyone, only those that have been online for some period and already have significant content that simply needs tweaking and proper title and metatag information added. They usually have relatively good existing PageRank and do well for other RELEVANT search phrases already. I offer that warning only to avoid instilling false hopes in anyone hoping to achieve the same instant ranking boost overnight.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Those clients that do succeed in this way are often thrilled with the results accomplished in such short order. I'd love to be able to offer that type of ranking boosts to everyone, but some are more equal than others when it comes to easy, inexpensive SEO tune-ups that rev up your rankings overnight. Your mileage may vary.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;WHY DO NEW SITES SUFFER?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What is going on with newer sites that don't get crawled for months? I've got a client, a newer attorney directory that offers tons of great information in the form of articles on specific areas of law, links to incredibly valuable and relevant legal sites and over 600,000 attorneys listed by practice area and state. Yet the site has not been re-crawled by Google for over 3 months! Now this would not be such a big issue for many sites, but this site is relatively new and we've optimized all the titles, tags &amp;amp; page text, created a complete site map and placed links to all these resources on the front page.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I know that the site is not being crawled because Google's cached copy of the front page shows it before we did the work four months ago, without the new links and without title tags. We've submitted the site by hand, (manually) once a month for three months via the Google Add URL page. http://www.google.com/addurl.html When the hand submission failed to get it re-indexed for four months, we submitted the sitemap page, which has not been crawled at all. Google shows only ONE page on this site, when in fact it has thousands of pages, a sitemap and dozens static pages!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Part of the problem is that this site must be dynamic, since a database of over 632,000 attorneys must be accessed, retrieved and served for any of those law firms searched for to be returned to the site visitor. Google warns owners of dynamic sites that Googlebot may not crawl dynamically generated pages with &amp;quot;?&amp;quot;&amp;quot; question marks in the URL. This is to avoid crashing the server with too many concurrent page requests from Google's spider. http://www.google.com/webmasters/2.html#A1&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The solution to this dynamic URL problem has been discussed widely in search engine forums and solutions have been bandied about including software provided by SEO's, URL re-write techniques for dynamic pages on APACHE servers http://www.alistapart.com/articles/urls/ and PHP pages http://www.stargeek.com/php-seo.php to generate search engine friendly URL's. Others recommend simply adding static HTML sitemap pages as alternatives for the search engine spiders. In this instance the client's developer simply said &amp;quot;I can't do that (PHP solution) on this server&amp;quot;. So we resorted to putting up the static HTML sitemap pages with hard-coded&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;URLS to the main 54 pages of the site at http://lawfirm411.com/Law-Firm-411-sitemap.html This should get at least those fifty pages crawled by Googlebot, but Googles' spider appears not to be crawling this site at all. How do we know this? See for yourself by using the following query in the search box at Google: allinurl:www.lawfirm411.com where the result page shows ONE page in the results. If you try that query on your own site (replace your own domain name for lawfirm411.com), you'll see the results lists ALL your pages.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The site home page was crawled by Google four months ago, when they took their &amp;quot;Cached Snapshot&amp;quot; of the page. You can see this by visiting the Google cached page here: http://66.102.7.104/search?sourceid=navclient&amp;amp;;ie=UTF-8&amp;amp;q=cache:www.lawfirm411.com where the date of this snapshot is &amp;quot;Apr 20, 2004 07:42:19 GMT&amp;quot; and they haven't been back since. The page in that snapshot has none of the newly added links, an outdated title tag, and old content.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This problem is not unique to this site. One client we worked with two years ago had a dynamically generated, framed site! Those two site structures have always given search engines trouble. Their site was not crawled at all and only the front page showed up. Our solution was to create a second domain (owned by the client), which had static HTML pages that precisely mirrored the content of the client's framed, dynamically generated site. Guess what happened after Googlebot crawled the static site? Google indexed the framed site in full and then banned the static site from the index! Not an approach we advocate, but the one that worked for this client.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We're still searching for ways to get Googlebot back to LawFirm411.com before creating that new static site, but decided to share this odd experience with the SEO community before going to any extremes. Google provides over 70% of most search engine referred traffic to ALL of our clients and we realized we can't site idly by and see a major client languish because Googlebot didn't like what it found at the client site on the first visit four months ago. This issue dogs newer sites in other places as well. The Open Directory Project has also become notoriously slow in adding new sites to the directory and in this case, has not picked up this site even after 6 regular monthly submissions. In the crudest form it was almost spamming, but done properly, it will get your website pages spidered almost immediately and indexed in less than a week.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Blog and Ping&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The crude method involved first setting up both a blogger (.blogspot) blog and a free myYahoo page. You add the RSS or Atom link from your blog to your myYahoo page, so that your blog feeds into your myYahoo website.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You then write a page into your blog with links to webpages that you want Google and Yahoo to find and index. After posting your new blog entry, you then ping your myYahoo page to tell it that there's a new entry at your blog. Then you go to Yahoo, open your myYahoo page, and the blog headline should be there.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The assumption is that Yahoo would spider all feeds going into it's myYahoo pages and because Google owns Blogger.com they would spider all new blog entries at Blogger.com ... and in fact this is indeed what happens. Start a blog, add entry's to it every day, and in less than a week it will be spidered as soon almost as you post to it. This applies not only to webmasters involved in Internet-based home businesses, but to webmasters in general.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Additionally, it seems that many people that are in the business of search engine optimization (SEO) are, with good reason, going completely bonkers. As Google came on the scene in 1998 and quickly dominated the search business, website optimization became largely a game of shooting at a single target, namely, pleasing Google...for all intents and purposes, Google became the &amp;quot;800 pound gorilla&amp;quot; of the search engine business.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Since the advent of search engines (particularly Google) spawned the whole SEO business, I guess its only fair that the search engine industry can once again turn the SEO business on its ear, and it seems now to be sort of a cat and mouse (not desktop) relationship that can get really interesting as we move forward.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Not only are there now several viable players (most notably Google, Yahoo, Microsoft and Ask Jeeves) in the search engine business, but they are all adopting different and frequently changing algorithms for determining the ranking positions for websites.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The current game is that webmasters are trying to figure out how the various search engines perform the rankings and, on the flip side, the search engines are striving to be unpredictable to those webmasters and SEO firms.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For those people using websites to promote home-based businesses, it can be stressful constantly trying to determine &amp;quot;what the search engines want&amp;quot; and agonizing over every downward fluctuation in rankings that their website may experience.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Looking forward in time, I think we can expect that rankings will fluctuate frequently and will not be at all consistent from one search engine to another. It will be quite common that for a particular search term a website might suffer a drop in position ranking for search engine &amp;quot;A&amp;quot; and an increase position ranking for search engine &amp;quot;B&amp;quot; at essentially the same point in time.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Rather than stressing out over every position ranking &amp;quot;wiggle&amp;quot;, a better approach might be to just focus on &amp;quot;what do visitors to my site want?&amp;quot;. The search engines are striving to give their users a quality (relevant) search experience and if you are focused in giving visitors to your website what they are looking for, these paths will meet somewhere down the road.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You can save yourself alot of consternation by focusing upon the needs of the website visitors you are seeking to attract, rather than chasing the frequently changing ranking algorithms of several search engines. Here's what we found.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We chose the search term &amp;quot;real estate fiji&amp;quot; because it's a competitive industry and geographically specific. We also searched with the same phrase, misspelled to see if the search engine would suggest the correct spelling.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Google&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Initially loading the search page for Google is lightning fast.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The look is clean and easy to understand.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Search time was 0.15 seconds.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The search yielded 1,190,000 results.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;All results on the first page were relevant.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Spellcheck was available.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Yahoo!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Initially loading the search page for Yahoo! is a little bit slower than Google, but still fast.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Search time was 0.18 seconds.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The search yielded 711,000 results.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It is difficult to tell the sponsored links from the actual web results.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;All results on the first page were relevant, however one of them directed you to another set of results for your search at DMOZ.org.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Spellcheck was available.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;AskJeeves&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Initially loading the search page for AskJeeves is fast.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Search time was not posted and was much slower than Google &amp;amp; Yahoo!.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The search yielded 63,100 results.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sponsored links take up the whole screen. This could be helpful.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Spellcheck was available.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;MSN&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Initially loading the search page for MSN is fast.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Search time was not posted but was average.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The search yielded 112,607 results.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;All except one of the results were relevant. This result pointed to Philippines real estate. Also, one the results directed you to DMOZ, where a second search for your keywords is performed.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Spellcheck was available.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Alexa&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Initially loading the search page for Alexa was fast.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Search time was not posted but was somewhat slow.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The search yielded 208,000 results.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It was difficult to tell the sponsored results from the web results.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Some results included screen shots.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The look was kind of disorganized.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Spellcheck was available.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;AltaVista&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Initially loading the search page for AltaVista is fast.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Search time was not posted but was a sliver slower than Google.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The search yielded 736,000 results.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The sponsored results take up almost the entire screen. You have to scroll to get to the good stuff.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The results are all relevant, though one redirects you to DMOZ, where a second search for your keywords is performed.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Spellcheck was available.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Lycos&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Initially loading the search page for Lycos is fast.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Search time was not posted but was rather slow.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The search yielded 114,356 results.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The sponsored results take up almost the entire screen. My favorite search engine is the best. Why? Google always offers the most results for any given search (they currently have over 8 billion pages indexed), it's faster than the Audi Quattro we test drove this morning, and 9 times out of ten, in my experience, all the front page results are relevant to my search. In fact, I usually find what I'm looking for within the first few sites listed. I also really respect the fact that two college kids started it (kinda like Abalone Designs!) and that those two college kids seem not to have forgotten where they came from. If you check out the images at Google's press center (http:// www.google.com/press/images.html) and scroll down to the Everyday Life Inside Google section, you'll get a feeling that life at Google is fun.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Google is the most used search engine on the web. In May, 2004, 36.8% of all searches on the web were done using Google. Also during that month, Google powered 54% of all searches done on the web (Read more about these figures here).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Google owes their success to their mind-boggling algorithm. This intricate formula sucks in a web page, considers its keyword density, its link popularity, domain name, how often it is updated, the amount of content in the site, and a myriad of other things that few know and spits out a number called PageRank. There is absolutely no way to be sure how to get your site to number one on Google, but there are a few things that we know can help:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Make sure your site is well organized, visitor friendly and useful. Google seems to like sites that are listed in the Open Directory Project, and my theory is that it's because the Open Directory Project is human edited. This means real human eyes have looked at each site that is included in the directory and deemed it useful in some way or another. If your site has a link on The Open Directory Project, you're on the right track.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Avoid &amp;quot;spamming&amp;quot;. Spamming refers to many different things. If you add keywords to your site that are out of context or hidden from plain view, it's considered spamming. Resubmitting your site to Google can be looked upon as spamming. The basic principal is to make sure every page on your site is professional looking, clean, organized and has its own unique information to offer.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Try to trade links with good quality sites that you like, 'cause if you like them, chances are they have something to offer and Google will recognize that. The more good quality sites around the web that have links pointing to your site, the higher your link popularity will be.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Stay away from hi-tech sites unless you offer an alternative. ie. If your site has been designed in Flash, try to offer a plain HTML version of the site. Google can index flash but it's not likely that it will be indexed well, and your ranking will suffer. Frames are also a no-no. Although Google can index framed sites as well, again, the ranking can suffer and more importantly, frames are universally recognized in our industry as hideous!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Keep the content on each page to a decent level. You don't want too much content, but you definitely do not want too little. A good way to judge what a good content level is, is to search for the #1 ranking site for the keywords you wish to target, and see how much content they have. Make your content keyword-rich, but don't make it so full of keywords that it sounds ridiculous to visitors. You want to keep the visitors you get from Google, right?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Google almost always offers you the best resource for your query due to the fact that all of these things matter to them. They are also always trying to find ways to improve on the Google Algorithm so they can continue to offer us the best service. Every once in a while we hear about this new search engine and that new search engine, but no one seems to have been able to catch up. A constantly evolving style guide that works from its insights into how people use and read web sites.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A style guide that puts the visitor first, puts their needs ahead of the academic opinions of experts.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A style guide that automatically rewards sites that serve their readers the best.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If we study Google not as a search engine, but as a style guide, what does it tell us about how we should write our web pages?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&amp;gt;&amp;gt; 1. Make the subject of each page absolutely clear.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As visitors arrive at your site, regardless of the entry page, the first question in their minds is, &amp;quot;Am I in the right place? Will I find what I want here? Can I achieve what I want to achieve here?&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Fortunately, the web page format gives us a title, headlines, first paragraphs and subheads we can use. So it makes sense to use them to make it abundantly clear to our visitors what the page is about.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We'll do this for our visitors. But, because doing so helps our visitors, Google will reward us.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&amp;gt;&amp;gt; 2. Make your home page short text clear&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;First-time visitors to your home page are unlikely to be able to achieve their objective through that page alone. So you need to write short text that will quickly and clearly let them know if you have what they want deeper in your site, and how to get there.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This means using the right words in your headings, subheads and short descriptions. It means anticipating the words and phrases most visitors will have in their minds and will scan for. It means understanding which words and phrases best correspond to your visitors' needs.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Write these headings and short descriptions with your readers in mind and, once again, Google will reward you.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&amp;gt;&amp;gt; 3. Make your text links relevant and descriptive&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A text link that says, &amp;quot;More...&amp;quot; or &amp;quot;Click here&amp;quot; or &amp;quot;Learn More...&amp;quot; tells the reader nothing about the destination page.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Visitors scan your text links in the same way as they scan headings, subheads and short text. So provide them with clues. If you have an interior page about a weight-loss hypnosis service, write a link that says something like, &amp;quot;More on weight-loss hypnosis&amp;quot;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Do this and you'll be helping your readers a great deal. And yes, Google will reward you for your efforts.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&amp;gt;&amp;gt; Concluding thoughts...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;By all means use a traditional style guide. They are great for getting your grammar right and choosing the right words. That said, many of them conflict in their recommendations as to the correct online terms. To some, a web site is a web site, to others it's a website.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But back to Google as a style guide for a moment. This whole exercise, this make-believe about Google being a digital, interactive style guide is all about the importance of writing for your readers.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Yes, what I have been talking about it using the correct keywords and phrases in the appropriate places.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;However, too many people write their pages with Google as the primary audience. I think that's the wrong approach. You get a clunky text flow that, intuitively, feels wrong to the reader.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Instead, write with a clear understanding of what your readers need. You may find it quite useful, depending on the type of website you have.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is it; basically, when you optimize a website, you first want to enter at least 30 keywords into the 'head' of your web page. No problem there.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The next step in optimizing is that you must put each of your keywords into the text of your web page at least 4 times!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is one area where your web page sinks or swims in the search engine 'spidering' process. This is where one must get, er.. creative.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We've all seen those web pages that are about a mile long and so wordy, that you kind of loose track as to what the heck they are talking about. Well, optimizing is what that's about. That and testimonials, which are a good thing to have, but most experts agree that you've got to get right down to the point and not loose your reader.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If this page is in a surf exchange, you're expecting your viewer to read a mile long page in about 30 seconds. Trying to get all your key words into your ad text 4 times, can make it read a bit funny.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So here are a couple of alternatives;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you use graphics, (and who doesn't?), you are often able to enter text as mouse over text, as if you were going to link the graphic somewhere, but just put in some graphics that you don't plan to use as links and cram as many keywords into the mouse over as you can.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;On some of my sites you see a few extra graphics that seem to be there purely for decoration, until you put your mouse on one and see a mouse over text that stretches off the screen.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But most folks don't put their mouse on a graphic unless they are told it's a link.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I honestly thought of that myself, but I have since seen the idea in Trafficology.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Another one that I thought up, and haven't seen anywhere else is this;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Just create a text box and load all your keywords into it as many times as you need, or use four boxes, (just copy and paste) then set the color of your fonts for the text in these boxes to match the background color of your web page. Google doesn't like over-optimized, high keyword densities and over use of keywords in headings, etc. like they use to.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Yahoo, on the other hand, looks at on-page factors more, such as keyword density, keywords in headings, etc. That is where the problem comes in.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Of course, they both look at everyting, but keep these two very important points in mind when you are trying to optimize your site.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When you search both Google and Yahoo for a keyword phrase, you will usually find a BIG difference in the Search Engine Results Pages or &amp;quot;Serps&amp;quot; as it is usually called. Serps just means the list of websites that show up when you do a search on any of the search engines.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Back to Yahoo and Google. Here's why the results are different and in a nutshell what you have to do to rank high on each one of them.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Links from other websites are the most important thing to Google. The higher the ranking of the actual page your link is on the better. Remember it is NOT the ranking of the Home page of the site you are getting the link from, but the ranking of the page your link is actually on that counts.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The text in the link to your site is VERY important. It needs to have the keyword phrases you want to rank high for included.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Then the next most important thing to Google is the keywords in your Title tag and then the content on your page. If your content is over-optimized (too many uses of keyword phrases or too many keywords in your headings, etc.), that will hurt your ranking with Google instead of help you.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Of course, there are 101 other factors that count with both Yahoo and Google, but get the basics right and you will be well on your way to high rankings.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As for Yahoo, the content that is on the page is the most important. To rank high with Yahoo you need to use a lot of keyword phrases on the page, have a lot of keywords in the headings, have a high keyword density, etc.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Basically, Yahoo likes all of the things Google used to count as being important before Google decided that too many people knew this and were making the most highly optimized websites show up at the top instead of the most relevant sites.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now you can see why the sites that show up high on Yahoo don't show up high on Google and vice versa.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Bottom line: You could say that Google likes off-page factors (i.e. links) and Yahoo likes on-page factors. That's an over simplification, but it is a good rule of thumb.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you understand this one thing, you can get your rankings higher than most of your competitiors. Of course, you will have to get it all right if you want to be at the very top.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The problem is that you can't completely do what it takes to please both Yahoo and Google. Of course, links help you with both Google and Yahoo, but the other factors seem to be either or.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you have a reasonably good ranking on Yahoo and not Google and want to increase your Google ranking, I would recommend that you work on incoming links and particularly the text in those incoming links (and don't make them all word-for-word the same).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Then start cutting back on the over-optimizing of on-page factors and see when your Yahoo rankings start coming down and your Google rankings start coming up. Try to see how close you can come to making them both happy if ranking as high as possible on both is your goal.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Of course, this has to be done slowly because Google and Yahoo don't change their rankings that fast.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you want to get the highest ranking on just one of the search engines and not worry about the other one, your job is much easier.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;One last point.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Even though Google counts incoming links as being a lot more important than Yahoo does, the recent &amp;quot;search engine bombing&amp;quot; by political pranksters with the term &amp;quot;waffles&amp;quot; shows that Google is more immune to this than Yahoo. Obviously, Google wants a few other things to be in line before they will award top ranking to a site. Google is harder (if not imposible) to trick. A web site's link popularity is computed from the number and more importantly, the quality of links pointing to a web site.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Link Popularity history&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To gain a better understanding of link popularity it is useful to know why it became so crucial for search engine rankings. In the past a web page's ranking was determined, amongst other factors, by the number of keyword occurences within 'on-page' elements i.e. in page text, META tags, title tag.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When web developers learned that they could trick a search engine to return their web pages by cramming keywords into their pages the search engines had to get a bit smarter. They were using 'on-page' elements to determine relevance so it was only natural that they would look to elements out of direct control of the web page creator i.e. 'off-page' elements. Search engines made the assumption that the greater the number of links from other sites pointing to a web site, the more popular the web site is and therefore a more quality resource. This worked nicely in theory but in practice it was also to be abused.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Web site owners figured out many ways to get links pointing to their web sites one example of which was through the use of link farms, pages the contained nothing more than a collection of links, Quantity of links was being abused so the search engines made use of the old saying &amp;quot;quality not quantity&amp;quot; and began to assign a quality factor to each of the links pointing to a web site. Now web sites that had a higher number of high quality links were looked upon favourably by the search engines. Building link popularity became a science in itself and today is still the most time-consuming and frustrating activity for a search engine optimizer.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Main classes of links&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Note: In the following examples SiteA is our web site and SiteB is an outside site (i.e. a web site under a different domain name than SiteA).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Inbound links:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Inbound links to a web site are links that originate from an outside web site. An example would be a link on SiteB pointing into a page on SiteA.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;SiteA (----- SiteB&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Outbound links:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Outbound links from a web site are links pointing to a page on an outside web site. An example would be a link on SiteA pointing out to a page on SiteB.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;SiteA -----) SiteB&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There are two further classifications of links:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Reciprocal links:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;An example of a reciprocal link is when SiteA links to SiteB AND SiteB links to SiteA, the link is reciprocated by both parties.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;SiteA -----) SiteB&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;AND&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;SiteA (----- SiteB&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To achieve a high link popularity the type of links to build are inbound one-way links. This simulates how natural links are created i.e. links that people create to point to your site because they found it worth linking to.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For outbound links it is natural to assume that they might decrease link popularity of a web site but this is not true. You do not give away your link popularity when you link to another site. They do not add to your link popularity though.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Reciprocal links can add to your link popularity if the web site that you exchange links with has a higher link popularity than your site. However they are not as powerful as inbound, one-way links as they are quite artificial in nature i.e. most probably created by communication between the owners of both sites.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;How to build link popularity&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So it is quite obvious that to help build up a nice link popularity many inbound, one-way links need to be created. This can be achieved in a number of different (and most importantly, legal) ways:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Directories:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Directories are categorized listings of links from around the web. Many, many directories exist and vary in their methods of getting your link posted on them. They provide a great source of quality inbound, one-way links. Getting listed in quality directories such as DMOZ or Yahoo can be more beneficial for your link popularity than a lot of links from smaller, newer directories.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Great site content:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The most powerful way to get inbound, one-way links is to have great site content that other web sites will want to link to. This allows you to get links from sites other than directories, which can definitely be better. The best thing about this is that it requires no communication on your part, it just happens naturally. If your site has poor content then others sites may not link, including the directories. Most of the top ranking web sites today got to the top because of great content. Writing interesting and informative articles for your web site is a good way of getting these kind of links.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Emailing web site owners:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you come across a listing of links on a web site other than a directory e.g. a links page on a somebody's personal web site, it can do no harm to write the web site owner a polite email requesting a link to your site from their page. They may request a reciprocal link in return but sometimes they do not and you can get a quality inbound, one-way link for your efforts. I have got many links in the past using this method. In my email I always ask them to visit my site first before making a decision to link and I personalise each email with a comment or two about their site.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Summary&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The best and most effective way of increasing your search engine rankings is working to improve your web site's link popularity. This can be achieved by getting as many inbound, one-way links as you can from quality sites such as directories. There has been growing speculation around the SEO world that reciprocal linking is a thing of the past. Rumors are abound that PR means less and less, if anything. Bill Gates came out of his cave to say that &amp;quot;Today's search is nothing&amp;quot; and that it won't be that way for long. There are quiet rumblings in the SEO back alleys of a new, state-of- the-art search engine currently indexing the internet. Websites are dropping off the face of the planet. And we're all left to sit here and put together the pieces. So what is in store for 2005?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1) Reciprocal links, while not becoming totally dead, are decreasing in value, and there will most likely be an algorithm update to lessen their importance. The original thought process behind the importance of a link was that it was seen as a &amp;quot;vote&amp;quot; for the linked-to site. Now that reciprocal links are everywhere, it is hardly a great way to count &amp;quot;votes&amp;quot; for a website. Reciprocal linking will continue around the internet, although the amount of people who try to get away with one-way links (by never getting back to you once you've added their link) will increase significantly. This will, of course, be an attempt to acquire one-way links, which brings us to our next subject....&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2) One-way links and triangle linking, though already quite popular, should explode over the course of 2005. Both are much harder to control and acquire, which makes Google happy. The triangle link &amp;quot;ploy&amp;quot; makes links look like one-way links even though &amp;quot;Site A&amp;quot; is returning the favor to &amp;quot;Site B&amp;quot; through &amp;quot;Site C&amp;quot;. There will be attempts to sell triangle linking programs and systems by SEO companies, however, the complexity, difficulty and time involved in this scheme will produce ridiculous prices.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3) What this about a new search engine that is going to index every site on the internet, EVERY 10 seconds? Become.com has turned a few heads with it's claims. Site owners have reported Become Bots spidering &amp;quot;like crazy&amp;quot;. It's all quite hush, hush, however and you need to have an invite in order to test it out. It should be interesting to see what they're capable of if and when they decide to go live. There is a lot of debate over this issue, but there is no denying that it is far better than the old chugger they were using before. Love him or hate him, Gates has most likely given a hard right to the chin of Yahoo!, which seems to be suffering from a magnitude of quality problems. MSN will be second to Google in total searches in 2005.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;5) PR still has importance. However, it is also decreasing in value. PR is only based on the quantity and quality of links (both inbound and outbound) from the given web page. The most obvious reasoning for the declining importance theory is due to the fact that on any given search on Google, the PR of each page seems to have barely any correlation with it's place in the rankings. Imagine you are walking down a busy street with shops on either side of you. However every shop window is boarded up and all that is visible is its name. You mean to purchase a new Hi-Fi system and need to locate a suitable store. You look at all the names but are getting confused as to which one is for you. All of a sudden you see a store with 'Hi-Fi and Electrical' in its name. You enter and purchase your spanking new Hi-Fi system, but it is a bit expensive. And little did you know but the store next door also sold Hi-Fi systems but for a lot cheaper. However its name did not indicate this. In fact its name sounded more like a jewellery shop than an electrical store.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A search engine is rather like the shopper in the above example. It sees the title on each web page and determines whether this would be a good result to return based on its text. If you search for 'Hi-Fi' it is highly likely that some of the results returned will have 'Hi-Fi' in their title.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To be found using the search engines you should optimize your website for a set of keyword phrases. These keyword phrases should be included in your title tag. Suppose I was a website selling Hi-Fi systems, then I would like my website to appear in search engine results when searching with the phrase 'Hi-Fi systems'. If I include 'Hi-Fi systems' in my title tag I will increase the chances that the search engines will find the page and my ranking will be higher. Of course you are not limited to adding only one keyword phrase to your title, I would recommend two perhaps three but be careful not to make it too long. Also remember make it easy to understand and descriptive for a human.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Order these keyword phrases effectively:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Placing a keyword phrase at the start of the title tag allows it to be seen better by the search engines. Look at the following examples:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;* ABCDEF Electrical - Hi-Fi Systems&lt;br /&gt;* Hi-Fi Systems - ABCDEF Electrical&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Both of these two examples are acceptable to human eyes but in the eyes of the search engines the second is see as more relevant if 'Hi-Fi Systems' is searched for because it appears at the start of the title. Generally it is best to place company name or the name of website to the end of your title tag.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Make your title enticing to the eye:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Although this point does not make a lot of difference to the search engines it can help to get people to click on your link in search results.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Which is easier on the eye?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. XYZ COMPUTER HARDWARE&lt;br /&gt;2. XYZ CoMpUtEr HaRdWaRe&lt;br /&gt;3. XYZ Computer Hardware&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I imagine that most people would say that (3) is the most pleasing. (1) and (2) are harder to read because of improper captilization. In (1) you see that using all capitals detracts the importance of any words you actually want to draw attention to and also some search engines may penalise this practice. (2) is simply a nightmare to read.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Try to keep title tags as unique as possible:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As each page on your site should be unique so should your title tags. Not only do unique title tags make the site more descriptive and navigable to a person they help search engines answer queries more accurately and allow more penetration of your site's pages in their databases.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Common title tags mistakes:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;* Do not leave your title tag blank, ever!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;* Do not use 'Untitled' or default text in your title tag. If you are using a web page editing application it may place some default text in the title tag. Make sure you always check your title to make sure this doesn't happen.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;* Do not write title tags that are not relevant to the content on the page. Search engines compare text in the title tag against actual textual content on your page to rate relevancy. If the two are not related this will decrease your ranking. Also it is annoying to a person who visits your page when the title tag they saw going into your page does not relate to the content on the page. This will ensure that this person leaves your site and maybe never comes back.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;* Do not stuff your title tag with repeating keyword phrases. I still see thousands of websites with "Homepage" in the title bar, or "MyOneHotBusiness.com" and just that phrase or 'Title' is repeated throughout every page on their website! Each page in your website is (content) unique - make it's 'Title' unique too! Or call your webmaster with new "titles" for each of your website pages. Different values are placed on this "page title" from the different search engines and directories.&lt;br /&gt;Tip: Add "Chicago, Chicagoland, Illinois" to the end of your Title (your city, state). This helps in regional search queries.&lt;br /&gt;Do: Have at least 200 words of (content specific) text on the pages of importance (homepage, category pages, etc.). This is what the engines and directories DO read, these words and links are how the engines interpret what's on this page. Images or pictures of words or "ads" are not "read" so-to-speak. Make this text content highly relevant to the topic (product or service) on this page.&lt;br /&gt;Tip: Put your fancy Flash commercial on a link from your homepage and put up a content relevant page of your best text instead! Visitors will still look at your commercial if you tell us it's cool, but don't force us to watch it! - That's not what we came for. This Flash file does almost nothing for search engines and directories.&lt;br /&gt;Do: Have yourself or your professional staff write articles on their specific area of expertise in product or service. Make these articles a webpage with relevant links to the product or service directly.&lt;br /&gt;Short of hiring a Search Engine Marketing Consultant or a Professional Copywriter, these detailed articles if rich and full of relevant content, are the exact pages that will generate you the most qualified and targeted visitor to your business! Once these 'article pages' are crawled (indexed) by the search engines you will be pleasantly surprised to see that (now) you are a more relevant search result.&lt;br /&gt;(Not to be confused with 'links' or 'reciprocal linking programs' - your (article) webpages are much more "read" and effective in sending the reader to your site, or keeping them there, not to mention the branding opportunities)&lt;br /&gt;These articles not only show your business as an authority, they prove it in words and information for the reader, me, a human. These concise type articles are an excellent way to gain exposure, recognition (branding), traffic, and yes, even sales. You said you were an authority, now prove it.&lt;br /&gt;Tip: Submit these articles to other online and offline publications and Ezine's. You make them available to other websites just for leaving your Author and link intact. There are businesses craving this type of content for their website's success! Your business website will begin receiving quality traffic from every website that posts your company's article(s)! Now there's a strong statement.&lt;br /&gt;Do: Include your URL (www.) in every piece of material you print - every piece of traditional advertising you already pay for!&lt;br /&gt;Every week I read through different newspapers and magazines - I can't believe how many businesses forget to put their web address in that Advertisement they paid for. Don't just say you do all these things!&lt;br /&gt;Do: Go and check!&lt;br /&gt;Tip: Go and check again!&lt;br /&gt;Because if you do your best with these few suggestions - your website will show up higher in the search results for those relevant terms you selected.
